WM Spilhaus & Co. (Pty) Ltd is one of South Africa’s oldest privately owned companies, proudly approaching 150 years of existence. Registered in October 1876, the company began with humble beginnings in shipping and agricultural produce exports.

By 1902, the company shifted focus to become a recognized importer of agricultural machinery, laying the foundation for decades of growth and diversification.

Over time, Spilhaus evolved into two divisions: Agricultural Engineering and Silver & Glassware. The agricultural division grew into a leading importer and distributor of farming machinery. Later, it expanded to establish an irrigation engineering division, which remains the core business today.

During its centenary celebrations in 1976, then Chairman Mr. W.J. Pretorius reflected on a company that had already withstood two world wars and numerous economic challenges, while continuing to gain stature and respect. The guiding values of the founder Mr. Arnold Wilhelm Spilhaus, namely integrity, fairness, and genuine concern for others remain at the heart of the company’s success.

From 1980 to 2002, Spilhaus was owned by WPK Agricultural (Pty) Ltd (now Kaap Agri), focusing on irrigation and industrial pumping solutions. In 2002, a management buy-out reshaped the business, giving rise to the Spilhaus franchise model that continues today, with a nationwide footprint.
